Sultry Cabernet Franc

Sultry Cabernet Franc comes from a single vineyard in Napa Valley, produced in quantities small enough to make one wonder whether sharing it is entirely wise.

Cabernet Franc, after all, is one of the wine world’s unmistakable personalities—recognizable for its graceful texture, aromatic charm, and quiet sophistication—yet rarely allowed to stand alone with such confidence.

Sultry wears its name beautifully. The aroma drifts from the glass with the ease of someone entering a room already certain of being noticed: dark fruit, roasted nuts, and an exotic whisper of spice, all carried with remarkable elegance rather than force. It has the familiar poise of Cabernet Sauvignon’s more refined cousin, but without the burden of heavy tannins or excessive seriousness.

On the palate, the wine is polished and wonderfully approachable, offering rounded dark fruits, subtle mineral notes, and supple tannins that seem content to support rather than dominate. Everything is in balance. Nothing shouts. And yet the wine lingers long after the glass is empty, which is perhaps the most sultry thing about it.

Cabernet Franc is believed to have been established in southwest France sometime in the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu transported cuttings of the vine to the Loire Valley. They were planted at the Abbey of Bourgueil under the care of an abbot named Breton.

Originally planted in our Estate vineyards to blend into our Bordeaux program the Cabernet Franc quickly showed that it deserved its own label.

Its unique personality has resulted in a strong group of followers and so the wine will remain in our lineup for the long term. In recent times we have brought a new Cabernet Franc vineyard on line but this wine is destined to always be in short supply.

Sultry ~ passionately warm ~ exciting strong sensual desire. Sultry was the word that occurred when Bill first smelled the Cabernet Franc. Known for its great aroma this wine is truly sensual and sultry in nature.

Franc ~ The name Franc may well refer to the Frankish people who established the most powerful Christian kingdom of early medieval western Europe. Cabernet Franc has other names like Bouchet most commonly used in Bordeaux which around the same time was occupied by the Basque people.
